Nilan Johnson Lewis honored with Women Lawyers' Leadership Award
Nilan Johnson Lewis has been awarded the Minnesota Women Lawyers' Leadership Award for 2010 in recognition for striving to enhance the status, influence, effectiveness and full and equal participation of female attorneys in their workplace. Shareholder Sheila Kerwin accepted the award on behalf of the firm at the Minnesota Women Lawyers Leadership Annual Meeting on May 12th at the IDS tower in downtown Minneapolis. The firm previously won the honor in 2001.
To receive the award employers must go through a rigorous review process where a selection committee looks at several factors, including the employers recruitment and hiring of women, their retention and support of women, women in leadership positions and innovations to put themselves on the “cutting edge” of policies and practices. Women make up 53 percent of the firm’s total shareholders — a rarity in the field of law. The firm employs 50 attorneys overall, and has worked diligently to create a rare recipe for success, retaining and advancing female lawyers at a ratio three times the national average of 19 percent.
